Is a tomato a fruit?

Yes and No. A tomato is botanically a berry. However, for the purposes of the Food Guide Pyramid, we classify a tomato as a vegetable. When the Food Guide Pyramid was developed, the common use of the food was taken into consideration when categorizing foods and we have traditionally used tomatoes as vegetables. Think about having a ham sandwich with a slice of tomato, onion and lettuce. How does a slice of orange on your sandwich sound? Kind of unusual right? So, we who use the Food Guide Pyramid will call tomatoes vegetables.
