EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT: Trinity Brown

I have been employed with Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service for just over 10 years.  I am the Pawnee County Extension Educator where I have 50% responsibility for Family and Consumer Science and 50% responsibility for 4-H Youth Development.  I am also the Pawnee County Extension Director.

One program that I enjoy teaching is Youth Cooking School.  I enjoy working with children by educating and teaching them life skills.  “Cooking Together is Fun” is a one day class where youth learn about food and kitchen safety; learn to read a recipe; learn about the MyPlate nutrition model; and the importance of proper handwashing.   The Cooking School is a hands-on program where the youth prepare and eat the recipes they prepare that day as a tasting lunch.  Other programs I enjoy teaching are sewing workshops and food preservation classes.

There were several things in my life which helped influence my career choice to be an FCS Educator.   I was an active 4-H member in my local and county club where I enjoyed working on many different FCS projects.  My participation in Family & Consumer Science Education and FCCLA throughout my high school years where I had a great teacher who inspired me to focus in the area of Family and Consumer Science also helped prepare me to be an effective FCS Educator.  My family life was ultimately what piqued my interest in becoming an FCS Educator for my career choice.  My grandmother was an OHCE member and she was always learning new things from her fellow OHCE members and her FCS Educator.  My sisters’ and my own involvement in Extension as 4-H members and my parents who always supported me and encouraged me to learn important life skills led me to pursue an Extension career to pass those same skills onto my children and the 4-H youth and county residents I work with.  To me, the cycle has become full circle because I now use the many life skills I learned in 4-H to educate others.

One of the favorite things I like about my job is working with many different people each day on a variety of topics.  The county clientele range from young to old.      I know that when I work with these individuals, I am helping them and making a difference in their lives by providing them research-based, unbiased, accurate information which will ultimately make a positive difference in their lives.  I enjoy helping others succeed by using the information provided by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and the Pawnee County OSU Extension Service.
