|EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT: LaDell Emmons|
LaDell Emmons, MS, Family & Consumer Science Education
Pittsburg County is located in the heart of Southeastern Oklahoma. We are home to “Little Italy” where the world famous Italian Festival is held yearly. Agri-tourism includes wineries, historic antique shopping and water recreation with four lakes.
LaDell conducts CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health), a yearly afterschool program for the McAlester Boys and Girls Club involving nutrition and physical education. An additional special focus is placed on teaching TANF clients the skills of family finance, nutrition, and clothing maintenance for their families.
She administers OrganWise Guys programming to 6 area schools. OWG provides an unusual approach to healthy eating for younger children, K-5th grades. She embraces teaching healthy lifestyles rather than food regulation to 1153 students.
LaDell loves to involve secondary school students from FFA and FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America-formerly FHA) in extension programming. They are trained in the financial literacy program, “Raising Young Readers” and in providing nutritional assemblies to OrganWise Guys audiences. With her past history as advisor to FCCLA, she recognizes the mentoring component of developing leadership skills of these Career Tech groups, many who are current 4-H members. It also strengthens the introduction of youth to Family and Consumer Science careers.
“As a child, I knew 4-H was the springboard that could launch me in a career involving communication. Public speaking, parliamentary procedure, music, and family issues may seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum but was a great fit in the Family and Consumer Science format”, says LaDell. “I couldn’t think of a more fulfilling career than helping people strive to enrich the lives of their families. I am truly blessed.”
