Healthy Minds: Nurturing Children’s Development from 0 to 36 Months

A series of seven reproducible handouts for parents addressing brain and child development over the first 36 months of life. Developed jointly by Zero to Three and the American Academy of Pediatrics based on the National Academy of Sciences’ report, “From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development”.

Healthy Families America Research Packet

A series of fact sheets summarizes results from site and state-level evaluations of Healthy Families America (HFA) home visiting services, a model used in Oklahoma and currently utilized by Cooperative Extension in Canadian, Delaware, and Texas counties. In particular, evidence has demonstrated that HFA reduces child maltreatment, promotes positive parenting practices, improves family health, enhances school readiness, and increases self-sufficiency. The packet also provides an overview of the Healthy Families America goals, its distinctive approach and achievements, characteristics of effective home visitors, and funding resources.

Child & Family WebGuide  - www.cfw.tufts.edu

The WebGuide is the creation of Tufts University with support by the Society for Research in Child Development.  It serves as an online rating and review guide of websites and offers links to information on 130 different child-related topics.  The WebGuide is designed and useful for a broad range of audiences including parents, students, educators, child development professionals, and the general public. The main categories are family, education, health, typical development, and child care.  Each website included on the WebGuide is rated and has a summary description.

Becoming a parent is one of life’s most wonderful and challenging experiences. This 32 minute video includes information on forming healthy habits before and during pregnancy; the importance of prenatal care; how to prepare for your baby’s birth; how and where to get help with your questions.

 

Yelling, threatening & putting down: What To Do Instead

This 35 minute video presents common-sense techniques for dealing with four challenging parent-child interactions: (1) When children are very active. (2) When children get angry. (3) When children whine. (4) When siblings fight.

 

Ten things every child needs for the best start in life

 

 
This 60 minute video explains how our earliest interactions influence a child’s brain development. Researchers and child development experts are featured emphasizing ten simple things shown to help children’s brains develop: (1) parent/child interaction (2) loving touch (3) stable relationships (4) safe and healthy environment (5) self-esteem (6) quality child care (7) play (8) communication (9) music (10) reading.

Shaking, Hitting, Spanking, What to do instead

Includes 30 minute video and Leader’s Guide. Four common scenes that often lead to shaking, hitting, or spanking a child: (1) A baby won’t stop crying. (2) A toddler who plays with poisonous household cleansers. (3) An eight year-old boy who refuses to come in for dinner. (4)A nine year-old girl who won’t clean her room.

MAPPP (Maltreatment and Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Program)

Nine section manual with 30 minute video. These materials address three questions: (1) What is the relationship between child maltreatment and later adolescent pregnancy? (2) What are the factors associated with maltreatment of pregnant adolescents? (3) What is the likelihood that children of adolescent mothers will experience maltreatment?

Leader’s guide and book. Includes five workshops that focus on building assets in infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-age children.
